Box Office Slump 2011: Ticket Sales Drop to 16 Year Lows, International Numbers Increase
For Hollywood in 2011, it was the best of times and the worst of times. Internationally, the film business was booming: according to estimates, studios earned $13.53 billion overseas in 2011, an increase of 6 to 8 percent from 2010 and a new all-time record. Unfortunately, that success didn't extend to U.S. shores: ticket sales dropped to 1.28 billion in 2011, the lowest total since 1995. Thank goodness for increased prices and 3D surcharges! Because of the higher costs, revenue in 2011 will only dip 3.5 percent from where it was in 2010 ($10.2 billion from $10.58 billion), but that still doesn't show an industry in some distress. This will be the seventh straight year that ticket sales have declined since the high of 2003 (that was the year 'Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,' 'Finding Nemo,' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean' ruled the box office). According to the Los Angeles Times, total box-office per film dropped some 13 percent in 2011, because -- as research indicates -- people are more inclined to wait for movies to hit DVD and video on-demand services. "Younger people who are image-conscious don't want to talk about movies that are a week old," said Ben Carlson, president of social media research firm Fizziology to the Times. "If you don't see the movie at that first moment, then the desire to see it begins to fall away." Of course, the movies themselves could also be blamed. The top seven films at the box office in 2011 -- 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,' 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' 'Breaking Dawn Part 1,' 'The Hangover Part II,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,' 'Fast Five' and 'Cars 2' -- were sequels, while 'Thor,' 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' and 'Captain America' rounded out the list, films which could hardly be called originals. Might U.S. audiences be revolting against unoriginality? Unfortunately, it likely won't matter: with foreign grosses exploding and ticket prices rising, it seems that the domestic moviegoer is of less concern than ever before -- something the 2012 release calendar, chock full of sequels, prequels and reissues, seems to illustrate. Why didn't you go to the movies this year? What movies will you see with your disposable income in 2012? Let us know in the comments below and take part in our anticipation poll! 'Christmas Vacation': Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid and Beverly D'Angelo On Set in 1989 (VIDEO)
Since its release on Dec. 1, 1989, 'Christmas Vacation' has become a holiday staple -- and not just because Mavis Staples sang the now-classic title track. (Try the veal?) Starring Chevy Chase (before he was the anchor on 'Community'), Randy Quaid (before he ran away from the Star Whackers), Beverly D'Angelo (before 'Entourage') and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (before 'Seinfeld'), the film earned $71 million at the box office and -- unofficially -- received a lifetime holiday season pass from TBS. What was it like when 'Christmas Vacation' was being filmed? Thankfully, Entertainment Tonight has posted video of a long-lost set visit to 'Vacation,' which finds Chase mugging, Quaid holding onto reality with a supple grip, and D'Angelo looking as adorable as you remember. (Sorry, Ari Gold.) No talking head shots of the now-deceased William Hickey (he played Uncle Lewis), but at least you can see him onset with Chase. Watch the video ahead. Critic's Guide to Thursday TV: A Final Burn, a Community Classic, and More!
Jeffrey Donovan, Kristanna Loken Who's getting burned in the eventful season finale of USA Network's Burn Notice (10/9c)? Arch-villain Anson (Jere Burns), who it's now known is trying to rebuild the organization that burned Michael in the first place? Maybe Agent Pearce (Lauren Stamile), Michael's CIA handler? Anson's latest scheme in keeping Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) under his sadistic thumb is to force our hero to sabotage his boss's career, during a mission in which she puts him in charge of his first team (including cult familiars Dean Cain and Kristanna Loken). Michael's risking it all for the defiant and combative love of his life Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), to keep her from going to jail as a blackmail pawn. "There is no line [I won't cross] when it comes to you," he declares, but as Michael tries to save the day for everyone, someone's bound to pay the price. Should make for an interesting sixth season next year. Some intriguing twists on CBS's Thursday crime dramas, as that blasted Machine on Person of Interest (9/8c) spits out four Social Security numbers instead of one. Sounds like Reese and Finch will have their hands full. ... And on The Mentalist (10/9c), we get a glimpse of the bad old Patrick Jane (Simon Baker), when he survives a drowning but loses his memory, reverting to the con-man attitude he exhibited back before joining the CBI. ... From the watch-it-while-you can files, NBC presents one of the last new episodes of the underrated Prime Suspect (10/9c), as Jane Timoney (Maria Bello) and crew look into the death of a Jewish diamond merchant. ... Tonight's Bones repeat (Fox, 9/8c) is actually the backdoor pilot for the upcoming spinoff series The Finder (premiering Jan. 12), starring Geoff Stults as a quirky war vet with a knack for unearthing just about anything. Want more TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! So what else is on? ... Top repeat of the night: last season's instant-classic Community Christmas spectacular (NBC, 8/7c), a wild animated trip inside Abed's unpredictable psyche. ... Traditionalists, however, are more likely to tune in for another replay of the eternal classic A Charlie Brown Christmas on ABC (8/7c). Probably just the tonic to wipe from your brain Rory's channeling of Linus' speech about the meaning of Christmas from this week's bizarre Glee. ... Let's go to the tape: ABC's The Year With Katie Couric (9/8c) replays 2011's highs and lows, from the royal wedding of Kate and William to the sad farce of Kim Kardashian's nuptials, reliving the political revolutions abroad and the homegrown protests in our own cities, among other news stories that should continue to resonate for some time. Amazing Race's Marcus and Amani: We Thought We Could Make Another Comeback
Armani and Marcus Marcus and Amani Pollard's $1 million hopes on The Amazing Race finale ended almost as soon as the leg began in their Atlanta hometown when the former Indianapolis Colts tight end toiled at the first task of landing a simulated aircraft. Still, the couple believed that another comeback could be in the cards. "We didn't feel like [our setback] was insurmountable, but at the same time, being in it with people who love to compete and want to finish first, it makes it tougher," Marcus tells TVGuide.com. So why did he have so much trouble landing? Why didn't he and Amani switch? And how do they feel about being called "C students"? Find out below.Amazing Race's Jeremy and Sandy: We knew we couldn't catch upWhat happened with the flight simulator? Why couldn't you land?Marcus: I've been trying to explain to people that it's like me, 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, in a small car. Those simulator planes aren't [suitable] for my size. My feet and my knees weren't able to control the brakes properly. But I think the bigger problem is that I really don't like flying, to be honest with you. And every time we landed, it really felt like you were on a plane. I kept getting frustrated that I could not land this plane, but having a great partner, a great teammate, a great wife, she just calmed me down and let me know that it's OK. ... I don't remember [how long it took]. At one point they showed 12 [times] on the show, so I'm going to assume that was the last one. Were you not allowed to change seats so Amani could try?Marcus: We could have changed seats and I thought about it, but I think, being stubborn, I wanted to finish it. We would've had to go through the process all over again. She would have to take a few practice runs and I was so confident that I could get it done that I thought it would take more time to switch roles.Amani, you are the probably the most patient racer ever. How did you stay so calm during that and the whole Race?Amani: [Laughs] It's who I am, I guess. I didn't realize I was so patient until we watched the show, but everybody keeps telling me that. But that's what I'm like every day. I guess that's why my blood pressure rate is so good every time I go to the doctor. But this is life, so have fun! It's over in a blink of an eye, so just enjoy every moment. That's just how I live life. I tried to rub that off on Marcus. I understand that that had to have been very frustrating for him and what good would it do if we were both frustrated? You're not going to get anything accomplished.Did you think you were last when you were still doing it or did you think the other teams were having as much trouble as you were?Amani: I think we were fairly confident we were pretty close to last because it took us a while to get it done. And when we left the building, there was only one taxi there, so that confirmed it.Amazing Race's Ernie and Cindy: We made no mistakes in the finalDo you know how far behind Jeremy and Sandy you were at the end?Amani: We saw Jeremy and Sandy at the map, so I don't feel like we were that far behind them, but we don't really know in terms of time. You made up a lot of time then.Amani: I think The Dump helped us. ... If we had to drive in Atlanta, I think that would've been an advantage because Marcus can navigate the expressways here, but the thing about The Dump clue was that I knew the store Jeremy and Sandy went to because we've shopped there. When we Googled it, we knew that wasn't the place and it had to be the Margaret Mitchell House, so that saved us some time. I think they wasted a good hour getting to The Dump, running around it and coming back. Marcus did the Margaret Mitchell challenge and even though he claims he's a pecker [at typing] - which he is - he's never stepped down from a challenge or stepped back. That's probably also why we didn't switch in the simulator. Once we start something, we're not quitters and he wanted to attack that fear of flying. I wanted him to have that and support him. Life goes on beyond the Race. We've got to go home. This is our real relationship. Some people after the Race can go away from each other, but we can't!Did you complete the map task easily?Amani: Yes. Well, I don't want to say pretty easily. We're not the best at geography, but Marcus knocked it out. I rigged up first to do it, but because it required upper-body strength, Marcus thought that - not that I couldn't get it done - but he could get it done faster. It didn't go as quick as Ernie and Cindy did it, but of course, they're A students, so they know geography! They knocked that out, but being the C students we are, we took a bit, but hey. I'm kidding, I'm kidding! [Laughs]They say they don't remember making that comment. What did you think of it?Amani: A lot of people say things in the heat of the moment. Marcus and I always try to see the silver lining in everything, and maybe we're not A students. That's very probable, but it's not always the A students who run the world and who are making the executive decisions. There are C students who are doing some great things in the world, so you don't have to be an A student to do great things. There are probably a lot more B and C students than there are A students. C students of the world unite! [Laughs] Anybody below A, hey, it's OK! Join in with us!Marcus: We didn't do too bad for C students! You guys made so many comebacks. Did you think you could pull off one more?Marcus: We always wanted to keep racing and keep fighting. You never know what could happen. A taxi could break down. That happened to us already. You can get lost like Jeremy and Sandy did. ... It was still anybody's game until we saw Phil. ... We dug a hole, but we've dug holes before and climbed out of them. We didn't think this was going to be any different, so we always thought we could do it.Marcus, I don't think I've ever seen anyone have more fun with a bunny than you did. Marcus: [Laughs] I really enjoyed that task! Amani said on the show that we picked tasks so our kids could see us doing it, and our oldest, Miles, loves bunnies. So we thought that would be a great challenge for us. Turning the butter would be too tough. I had a great time putting the steeplechase together, hopping the bunny. I remember telling the bunny, "Hey, bunny, I've had a frustrating morning, so I need you to jump over the steeples real fast." And that's what it did. I had a good time with those bunnies.Amazing Race's Andy and Tommy: We trusted our taxi driver too muchDo you have any pet bunnies?Amani: It's on our kids' Christmas list. That's the No. 1 thing. Is Santa going to get them a bunny?Amani: I don't know. He better bring one down the chimney with him! [Laughs]Marcus: It would be fun if we could get that bunny and train it to jump over steeples, but the bunny we'd get would just sit around and eat all day. There's nothing wrong with that. Do you really make that many football references in real life, Marcus, or was that a show edit?Amani: Oh, that was totally an edit. He never talks football in real life.Marcus: I got asked questions to describe stuff on the Race and I just related it to football. But I don't talk like that every day. I don't even watch any pro football games! I watch more college games. So it was something they wanted to run with. What are you up to now?Marcus: We're going to head home, regroup and hang out with our kids, teach them basketball, football. We'll continue to run our store Maize 'N Grace. ... We've been asked [by fans] if we'd come back for an All-Stars season. We have no idea if we would qualify! I don't know what would make us All-Stars, but if the opportunity came along, we'd approach it then.

The uptick in business from Friday to Saturday indicated that there's real demand in the marketplace for adult-skewing movies, although Tinker Tailor also is appealing to younger moviegoers, evidenced by strong evening shows. Not to mention 20th TV has five new shows on four networks this year, New Girl, Terra Nova, Last Man Standing, American Horror Story and Homeland, each showing strong strides in viewership. And finally, there's The Simpsons, broadcasting its 500thepisode in February. All told, Walden looks after 34 shows currently in production. PHOTOS:The Scene at THR's 2011 Women In Entertainment Power 100 Breakfast But even with beloved classics like The X Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer under her belt, there's no denying the TV powerhouse that is Glee. Now in its third season on Fox, it remains the No. 1 scripted hour on television among 18- to 34-year-olds, while the worldwide Glee brand, which includes a record-breaking tour, 36 million songs sold on iTunes, 11 top-selling albums and a theatrical concert film, serves as an awe-inspiring example of cross-platform marketing at its finest. That's not to say the show hasn't taken its licks, however, and this year more than ever thanks to casting confusion and an occasional dip in the numbers -- like this week's episode which saw a 9 percent decline. It's backlash the press-savvy Walden, herself a former publicist, can't deny, but she doesn't make any apologies, either. "I don't think anything in the history of the medium could burn as brightly as Glee and not experience some period of time when the show is not the golden child," she tells the Hollywood Reporter. "It will be again. I fully believe in this series. I think that [co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] and his team have done exactly the right thing -- you put your head down, tell great stories and continue to produce an enormously entertaining show." PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of Fox's 'New Girl' Walden contends that because the criticism is mostly media-based, it doesn't speak to the passion of the audience. "They are connected to these characters," she says. "They read about the actors and the characters online, they collect the DVDs, they buy the merchandise, they are part of a community that connects with each other all centered on one TV show... At some point, it won't feel sexy to take shots at Glee anymore." Furthermore, where the ratings are concerned, Walden insists she and her fellow chairman Gary Newman aren't worried. "When you look at the live plus three and the live plus seven ratings, the show is still doing in excess of a five rating," she says. "Any company would be thrilled to have that show. I am not concerned about the ratings." VIDEO: Gary Numan, Dana Walden at 'Glee' 3D Premiere Still, working with creatives like Murphy does come with challenges, and in a way, it's what Walden lives for. "There's a whole emotional component to working with creative individuals which is unlike most businesses," she says. "I am not interested in working with a writer who wants to take every one of my notes. I'm looking for someone who will be thoughtful about my input and respect that we are partners, [but] I also want our creators to be emotional, passionate people because those are the people who tell the best stories. Ryan and I have an incredible relationship. We have a tremendous amount of trust for each other. I trust his instincts as much as anyone I have ever worked with. He has this incredible sense of what's in the zeitgeist." STORY:Anne Sweeney Tops THR's 2011 Women in Entertainment Power 100 List What is difficult about working with Murphy? "Saying no to him," Walden laughs. "He always gets the benefit of the doubt with me. Of the ideas he and I discuss, probably 90% of them I would pursue in some way. He's such a hard worker and so clear about his vision -- that's exactly what you want from a creator. And when he's set on something, he believes in it completely. Again, it's how I prefer it. I would rather work with someone like Ryan than someone who is purely pragmatic." It's a formula that's led to Walden's proudest -- and busiest -- year yet. "I cannot imagine a time in the company's history where we were experiencing success on as many different platforms as we are right now," she says. "But I've been very happy in my job. I've worked at this company for a long time and it's been a tremendous experience. Certainly this has been an incredible year for me personally." Idol Producer: No Major Changes For Brand New Season
First Released: November 24, 2011 3:27 PM EST Credit: Access Hollywood Caption Nigel Lythgoe chats with Access in a BritWeek event in La on April 26, 2011NY, N.Y. -- The American Idol Show executive producer Nigel Lythgoe states dont expect any major changes once the hit Fox Television show returns in The month of january after going through a comprehensive transformation last season. Lythgoe, who assisted transform Britains Pop Idol in to the American TV juggernaut in2002, came back as executive producer last season to usher within the publish-Simon Cowell era. That ended a 2-year hiatus that permitted him to pay attention to Which Means You Think You Are Able To Dance, that they produces helping judge. For that tenth The American Idol Show season, Lythgoe introduced new idol judges, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, to become listed on holdover Randy Jackson. Veteran music producer Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M, was introduced in being an in-house mentor for that participants. All are back for Season 11, Lythgoe stated. I believe we made lots of tweaks this past year, Lythgoe stated. I am not certain you want to make a lot of more tweaks this season. Lythgoe stated the most important change introduced this past year had nothing related to the idol judges: It had been a choice to prevent individuals seafood-out-of-water moments that forced very gifted performers to sing in styles that didnt suit them. The greatest change we made this past year ended up being to say, OK, if you are a rustic singer you are able to sing these genres inside your country style, Lythgoe stated. Weren't likely to pressure you to definitely do rock or whatever you no longer can do. You are able to have a Michael Jackson song and transform it country. That led to performers for example Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart evolving much much deeper in to the competition compared to what they may have in the past years. The 2 teenage runners up, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, were country performers. McCreery, the very first pure country Idol champion since Barbara Underwood in 2005, saw his October release, Obvious As Day, lead him to the very first country act to debut at No. 1 using its first studio album around the Billboard 200 chart. And also at 18, he grew to become the youngest guy to spread out towards the top of the chart together with his debut release. Younger crowd was the very first Idol champion to begin his publish-Idol career having a No. 1 album since Ruben Studdard in 2003. Lythgoe stated this past year the show found some incredible talent, also it am diverse. We've got this excellent jazz singer in Casey, we've got a soft jazz singer in Haley, and also the two country kids (within the finals) most likely in the past years wouldnt happen to be as effective simply because they could have been requested to sing within the variations that people i did so then, he stated a week ago. Lythgoe needs similar leads to Season 11. The children which have auditioned this season that would be taking to Hollywood in December are again really gifted and extremely diverse, he stated. Hopefully theyll cope with among the most difficult auditions, the Hollywood week, and obtain themselves in to the top 20. Lythgoe stated he thinks Idol ought to be totally concerning the talent and also the recent changes promote that. For me personally, he stated, its really showing the talent that's here and never attempting to take somebody whos gifted, beat them round the bucket and turn them out. Who's Brett Ratner? Become familiar with the Questionable Director
UPDATE: Brett Ratner has resigned as Academy awards producer after his questionable comments. Find out more here. Meet Brett Ratner: 'Tower Heist' director, future Oscars producer, and, based on all of the negative press he's received earlier this week (and for your matter, throughout his entire career), a gigantic self-absorbed jerk vulnerable to making crass and questionable claims. Since you may read, Ratner received fire on Monday after utilizing a gay slur to explain rehearsals throughout a publish-screening Q&A about 'Tower Heist.' Despite all of the outrage pinging round the Internet, Ratner could keep his job as Oscar producer. Knowing from his past, however, may possibly not be lengthy before Ratner jams another feet into his mouth. Who's this guy and -- more to the point -- how come people up in arms about his public persona? Let us discover. Brett Ratner was created in Miami Beach, Fla. At age 16, he enrolled at NYU's exclusive Tisch School from the Arts, where he could secure funding from Steven Spielberg for just one of his student films. After graduation, Ratner started doing music videos for artists for example LL Awesome J, Madonna, Wu-Tang Clan and Mariah Carey. In 1997, Ratner directed his first feature film, 'Money Talks,' a comedy starring Chris Tucker and Charlie Sheen. Even though movie was significantly panned, it wound up grossing $50 millon -- two times its $25 million budget. Work in blockbusters was created: his next three movies -- which incorporated 'Rush Hour' and it is follow up, both with Tucker -- made a lot more than $735 million worldwide, cementing Ratner's status like a Hollywood director increasing. He accepted the newly found fame, tossing lavish parties at his house, dating models, as well as taking photographs for 'Vogue.' After which, 'X-Males: The Final Stand' happened. Ratner's 'X-Men' follow up was, in a commercial sense, a massive hit -- it made nearly half a billion dollars worldwide -- however the critical response, particularly among fans from the popular comic series, was extremely negative. They stated that Ratner tried permanent harm to the franchise itself. Little did they already know he'd strike back having a couple of criticisms of their own. You cannot make these folks happy. I am type of the anti-Christ to those comic-book nerds. Each and every person who authored sh-t visited observe that movie multiple occasions just because a movie does not gross $200 something million unless of course people visit it more often than once... Probably the most absurd statement I have read is -- not to mention I checked out the web following the movie arrived on the scene -- which i hidden the franchise. After 'X-Men' and the other extremely effective 'Rush Hour' follow up, Ratner remained quiet around the movie-pointing front. He did a couple of music videos, were built with a cameo in HBO's 'Entourage' as well as began their own book posting company. On the way, however, he ongoing to create eyebrow-raising claims. Take this exchange from the Vanity Fair feature in March 2007, where Ratner was requested by author Nancy Jo Sales about his capability to attract gorgeous women. I requested [Ratner] -- while he enables you to definitely feel he's available to being requested may be -- "So why do women adore you? Have you got a large d-ck?" "No," he stated frankly. "It isn't large, however it is effective. I understand how to make use of it. You are able to put that in." And catching his double entendre, "I am talking about --" "No!" he stated, rethinking it. "Say it's large. It's huge!" Even that comment sounds tame in comparison as to the was coming. Earlier this August, Ratner was selected because the producer for that 84th annual Oscars. The response to his hire ranged from astonishment to anger to, during these pages, grudging support. Mostly, everyone was just confused. ("The man who directed 'Rush Hour' will probably be running the Academy awards?") Ratner eventually chose Eddie Murphy -- the co-lead in the 'Tower Heist' -- to host. Then, a week ago, throughout the press models for 'Tower Heist,' Ratner gave a job interview to G4's 'Attack from the Show.' Requested about his relationship with actress Olivia Munn, Ratner stated the next: I made use of up to now Olivia Munn, I'm going to be honest with everybody here. However when she was 'Lisa.' She wasn't Asian in those days. She was chilling out on my small group of 'After the Sunset,' I bumped her a couple of occasions, however i didn't remember her. Because she transformed her title. I did not realize it was exactly the same person and thus when she auditioned for me personally for any Television show, I didn't remember her, she got pissed off, and thus she composed each one of these tales about me eating shrimp and self pleasuring during my trailer. And she or he spoken about my weak points. The inappropriate claims did not hold on there. In a press event on Friday evening, a next day of the Olivia Munn incident, Ratner was requested concerning the rehearsals for 'Tower Heist.' His response? "Testing is perfect for fags." The Lgbt Alliance Against Defamation condemned the remarks, the ones started with Ratner to get rid of his job as Oscars producer. In some way, things handled to obtain a whole lot worse earlier this Monday. After apologizing for his "testing" comments, Ratner told Howard Stern he had didn't have sex with Olivia Munn, which his comments on 'Attack from the Show' were fabricated. Younger crowd accepted to creating actress Lindsay Lohan take an STD test before he'd sleep together with her. Which raises present. Next that's happened to Brett previously week, where does that leave him and the career? His position using the Academy awards is safe (Academy leader Tom Sherak arrived on the scene for Ratner), but his title is damaged worse than before. Even his status like a moneymaker is within question: 'Tower Heist' opened up having a disappointing $25 million in ticket sales earlier this weekend. It might be foolish to guess that Ratner's blockbuster days are behind him. Making financially effective and broadly accessible movies is exactly what he is doing, and couple of company directors can match his abilities in individuals departments. If he really wants to get to be the type of filmmaker who makes respect together with everything money, though, he'll should try to learn a brand new skill: tongue-control. Women and Children
A Day for Night Films production. Produced, directed, written by Daniel Mitelpunkt. With: Mark Doyle, Rosie Thomson, Matthew Cullum, Kirsty Bushell, Rupert Simonian, Louise Bush, James Hayes, Alan Williams, Philip Arditti.Facing fatherhood for the second time, an immature man tries to make amends for past failures in "Women and Children," a so-so debut feature with a sociological bent from Mike Leigh disciple Daniel Mitelpunkt. Shaped through improvisation, discussion and rehearsal, the characters come across as three-dimensional, but the protagonist is so flawed that it's difficult to sympathize with his plight as he lies his way deeper into a hole. Domestic broadcast, ancillary and indie showcases are best bets for further viewing. When thirtysomething Midlands restaurant worker Joe (Mark Doyle) learns that his girlfriend (Kirsty Bushell) is expecting, he admits, to her shock, that he already has a son. After she kicks him out, he decides to visit 16-year-old Jeremy (Rupert Simonian), whom he hasn't seen in years. This comes as an unwelcome surprise to the lad and Joe's ex, family and friends, who all believe he's been living in Spain. TV thesp Rosie Thompson makes a strong impression as the wife of Joe's onetime pal (Matthew Cullum). Israel-born, U.K.-based multihyphenate Mitelpunkt displays an eye for composition, but his story wants for poignancy.Camera (color, HD, widescreen), Nicolas Desaintquentin; editor, Haim Asaf Litani; music, Mitelpunkt; production designer/costume designer, Anna Oldham-Cooper. Lynne Ramsay Pointing Sci-Fi Moby Dick?
Director follows Kevin with IshmaelHow would you follow We have to Discuss Kevin, a terrifyingly chilly drama about murderous sons and brittle moms? Why, by adapting Herman Melville in space obviously! That, a minimum of, appears to become the completely apparent strategy that Lynne Ramsay is planning, telling Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo that her next project is really a sci-fi according to Melville's whale-disturbing Moby Dick."This is actually the very first time I have discussed it it has been very under systems," states Ramsay. "Moby Dick is an excellent novel, a united states classic, and I am focusing on something loosely according to that. It's science-fiction, so we are using the premise in to the universe, developing a whole " new world ", along with a new alien. It is a very mental piece, mainly happening within the ship, a little like Das Boot, therefore it is quite claustrophobic."Before there is talk of the new Moby Dick (excluding Chronilogical age of the Dragons, that was Ahab versus. giant flying lizards, starring Danny Glover and Vinnie Johnson), it had been underneath the aegis of Wanted's Timur Bekmambetov. Bekmambetov however, was apparently planning to possess a more charming and fewer complex Ahab in search of a whale leading to havoc with other shipping, within an "action-adventure revenge story" heavy around the Forex - that is a little like adapting Crime &Punishment like a police thriller should you request us, but hey! We are sure it'd look great. This isn't Ramsay's approach. Most importantly, Ramsay thinks, it is not really this type of leap from Kevin whatsoever, because, "It's another monster movie the monster's Ahab, this mad captain taking everybody about this crazy journey for their dying, from his requirement for revenge. It's fascinating stuff."Not really a director accustomed to focusing on a massive, Ramsay states she's wishing for additional money than normal, but simultaneously certain that the as-yet untitled film can be achieved at relatively little expense: "I am accustomed to low budgets you discover methods to do things economically."It isn't obvious if the film is really setup anywhere yet, or whether Ramsay is working under her very own steam at this time. But together with writing her script, Ramsay discloses she's also done some early focus on the pictures and also the seem design, and it has come up with a trailer that they describes as "just a little mood-board film."Until that leaks online, here's the entire interview, on Kermode and Mayo's YouTube funnel.

Paranormal Activity 3: Film Review
Horror movie franchises will be the film just like unhealthy foods restaurants -- everyone else feels comfortable because it knows precisely what it's getting. Such might be the problem while using third installment of Paramount's low-budget cash cow series. Whilst not exactly breaking any new ground having its at this time very familiar found-footage format, Paranormal Activity 3 hews for the formula in masterfully crafted fashion, mustering within the requisite scares and much more. With no Saw follow-up to provide competition this year, this should actually be the key-or-treaters' movie choice in October.our editor recommendsParanormal Activity 3 Trailer Hits the internet Newcomer company company directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who've some understanding about faux documentaries (Catfish), have labored with with returning film author Christopher Landon to effectively reprise the series' trademark elements. But this edition--a prequel that concerns the greater youthful versions in the adult brothers and sisters within the initial few-is tight and much more frightening in comparison to previous installment. Furthermore, it features ample doses of humor that both offers a pressure valve for your tension and brings a welcome self-conscious mockery for the proceedings. Carrying out a preamble featuring Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden briefly reprising their roles since the ill-fated siblings and siblings Katie and Kristie, the story goes back to 1988, when their childhood selves (Chloe Csengery, Jessica Brown) reside in a correctly-hired suburban California home with mother Julie (Laurie Bittner) and her boyfriend Dennis (Chris Cruz). PHOTOS: Legendary Horror Movies Things inevitably start to go bump inside the evening, as well as, since Dennis can be a wedding videographer he's well fitted to blanket the house while using video cameras that will give you the type of spooky footage possess a inclination to seems to in some manner end up as movies inside our multiplexes. Among the creepier elements the filmmakers have devised are Kristi's interactions by getting an imaginary, ill-tempered playmate named Toby and a game title title of "Bloody Mary" (recommended at inside the film's trailer getting a scene that's not inside the feature) that goes serious awry. Nevertheless the most ingenious idea may also be wonderfully simple. Furthermore for the stationary and hands-held cameras formerly employed, there is a jerry-rigged camera around the progressively rotating oscillating fan supplying you having a couple of of the very frightening moments. Such sequences while you together with a babysitter who probably won't be returning to get results for this family soon, everyone else needs to attend breathlessly since the camera pans forward and backward, forward and backward, progressively revealing the terrible goings-on. Although there's an undeniably repetitive aspect for the films, audiences probably won't mind greatly. And certainly this series, despite the fact that it fortunately doesn't desire to use gimmicky 3d, fairly demands to look round the silver screen. Resembling film versions of "Where's Waldo," the movies demand intense concentration since the audience peers within the frame trying to put the element that doesn't belong. Of course, the climax, in which the family helps to make the mistake of retreating for the sweet grandmother's (Hallie Foote) house, replaces the atmosphere of mystery by getting an very explicit explication for what's been happening. Nevertheless it does effectively fulfill its reliance on setting some misunderstanding for your inevitable next installment. You don't need a Ouija Board to discern that it's going to probably arrive sometime around next Halloween. Opens March. 21 (Vital Pictures) Production: Blumhouse, Solana Films, Room 101, Corporation. Cast: Laurie Bittner, Chris Cruz, Chloe Csengery, Jessica Brown, Hallie Foote, Dustin Ingram, Johanna Braddy, Katie Featherston, John Boland, Sprague Grayden. Constantly & 50/50 LFF Galas
Possess a gander within the stars of last nightTwo gala films made their bow yesterday evening within the BFILondon Film Festival, Constantly and 50/50. They'd a few things to keep: both saw associations going less-than-easily are both just a little unforeseen and cooler than you'd think, and both star a couple of from the cooler youthful stars around. To begin with, author/director Drake Doremus and star Felicity Manley were around for Constantly, which sees Manley just like a youthful British student who falls with an American (Anton Yelchin) but sees the romance encounter problems when she's tossed in the united states for outstaying her visa. There's able support in the type of Jennifer Lawrence, the Twilight Saga's Charlie Bewley and Alex Kingston too - very good choosing for this kind of disgustingly youthful director (he's only 28).Then there's 50/50, the "cancer comedy" by which Ernest Gordon-Levitt is taken ill and requires to regulate his existence accordingly - a process that naturally posseses an impact upon his pals (including SethRogen) and also the girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard). He's also designated, within their treatment, a doctoral candidate to judge his condition (Anna Kendrick). Rogen and Kendrick were both available last evening, seeing the film off popular.50/50 is going inside the UKon November 25, and Constantly follows on February 3 next season. The LFFcontinues until October 26.

Hero Shots Galore: The Avengers Trailer Assembles!
This morning Disney released the first full trailer for Joss Whedon’s Marvel superhero party The Avengers, and ZOMG guys — have there ever been two minutes of action more packed with hero shots, zingers, and things blowing up before this very moment? (Michael Bay might give Whedon a run for his money, but the Avengers trailer has what even his robot spectaculars don’t: copious slow-mo superhero booty shots. Consider the bar raised.) In fact, the trailer doesn’t even bother with explaining plot and set-up; it assumes (correctly) that you already know what The Avengers is all about, why Sam Jackson’s corralling a bunch of A-listers to his cause and who that pale, long-haired Shakespearean looking fellow is that’s tearing up the streets of America. Which means: Cut to the assembling, already! Let’s take a look. “What do we do?” “We get ready.” Oh, that Sam Jackson. Always prepared. In fact, the only nagging thing about this trailer, which I kind of love because of the aforementioned butt-shots, the fiery set pieces, and the sight of Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson looking bad ass in their spiffy costumes, is the strangely conspicuous verbiage this super-team throws around. “Assemble” is their battle cry? What are they, Voltron? Putting a puzzle together? Building IKEA furniture? “But it’s from the comics!” you say. Yeah, yeah. Well, it sounds funny. Also see the line, “”If we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn sure we’ll avenge it,” spoken by a serious RDJ, in contrast to the rampage of witty one-liners he’s on during the rest of the trailer. Of course you will. You’re the Avengers. Verdict: I’m nitpicking. This looks pretty badass, and who am I kidding? They had me at [explosion]. [Apple]
